Cardiac diseases - conditions affecting the blood vessels and heart - are frightening. Even more so when it’s your cat or dog’s heart. Good thing you’re reading this primer on warning signs for potential trouble!
Cardiac Disease in Pets
Cardiac diseases have different causes. Some are even genetic. So while every dog and cat needs a healthy diet, proper exercise, and routine veterinary care, that may not be enough to prevent certain cardiac conditions.
This is why you want to watch out for key signs of problems:
Difficulty breathing - especially during activity
Changes in weight - either up or down
Depression or lethargy - loss of interest in everything
Heart Trouble in Dogs
Cardiac disease in dogs pops up in 10% of the population. That’s pretty common! And in addition to the above symptoms, you can see some extra warning signs in canines:
Episodes of collapse or fainting, particularly during exercise or excitement
Persistent coughing, even when resting
Cardio Cats
Surprisingly, cardiac disease may be MORE common in cats. But it’s challenging to diagnose. And HIDING is a common sign in felines that don’t feel good. So you’ll want to add that to this extra list of symptoms for kitties:
Lack of appetite - sometimes suddenly
Trouble using their back (or even front) legs - an emergency situation!
Staying on Alert
Prevention always goes a long way for pets. So does watchfulness. Whenever you notice something unusual, it’s a good time to contact your vet. Especially with cardiac signs. Sent from my iPhone
